Prof. Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin 

Sixth Vice Chancellor of UMS (July 2019 – July 2022) 

Professor Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 14th January 1968.  He received his early education Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan All Saints Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. He earned his BSc (Hons) and MSc in 1992 and 1994, respectively at Universiti Putra Malaysia. He then went on to earn his PhD (1997) in Heterogeneous Catalysis at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom. 

Professor Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin started his career as a tutor in July 1993 and then lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) since August 1997. He was promoted to Associate Professor on 1st May 2002 and to full professor on 1st October 2007. He was the founding Head of Catalysis Science and Technology Research Centre (PutraCAT) from 1st Sept 2008 until Sept 2014.  His research interest lies in the catalytic production of bioenergy from biomass and wastes. He published more than 470 Scopus indexed scientific publications includes various reviews on biodiesel and hydrogen production.   

Professor Taufiq-Yap have 69 awards, among them is Awards and Distinctions: National Young Scientist Award (2002); The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award (2008), Top Research Scientist Malaysia (2013), Malaysia’s Research STAR Award (2018) and listed as World’s Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University, USA. He received the highest award Gold Medal for Excellent in Chemistry 2022.    

As a recognition of his services and contributions to education in UMS throughout his tenure, he was honored this award;  

  1. Gold Medal for Excellence in Chemistry (2022) awarded by Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM). 
  2. Commanders of the Order of Kinabalu (Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu, PGDK). Awarded by TYT Governor of Sabah (13 Oct 2022)
  3. Tokoh Maulidur Rasul (Peringkat Negeri Sabah) 2022. Awarded by the Sabah State Government.
  4. Profesional Technologist (2021), Malaysian Board of Technologist
  5. Listed as World’s Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University (2020, 2021, 2022).
  6. Distinguished Order of Meritorious Service (Panglima Jasa Negara, PJN). Awarded by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (9 Sept 2019).

Professor Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin was appointed as the sixth Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah in July 2019. He served and led the university until July 2022. Among the important matters he highlighted during his tenure was concept of ‘kampus rahmah’ and the Faculty of Islamic Studies. His is Tokoh Maulidur Rasul in the year 1442H/2022M
